During the Nintendo Direct conference yesterday, Nintendo announced Mario and Donkey Kong as a downloadable title for the Nintendo 3DS eShop.

Similar to the Mario vs Donkey Kong series that was a flagship title for the DSi’s downloadable roster since its debut on the Gameboy Advance as an homage to the Gameboy Donkey Kong, this new game teams everyone up together this time, with a path-laying mechanic from the player to guide the Mini-Mario’s to the exit. The title will also feature mini-games and alternative skins for each of the Minis to guide home, including a Donkey Kong and Princess Peach skin!

While a step away from the puzzle mechanics introduced in the DSi version, this seems like an interesting direction that fans the board game Carcassonne can get behind. No release date as of yet, but it is expected to hit the eShop around Q2 2013.
