Some of you are probably wondering about the details behind the announcement that Dead or Alive 5 Plus will feature cross-platform gameplay features between the PlayStation Vita version due March 22 and the already released PlayStation 3 version of Dead or Alive 5. The developers, Team Ninja, and publisher, Tecmo Koei, have now peeled off the lid on the details.

First up is the Cross-Play which will enable portable gamers to fight against console users and vice versa. According to the press release, hardware icons will appear next to player names to indicate which device they will be using, both running at 60fps. The press release goes on to say “…so there will be no lag or slowdown even when playing on different devices.” Additionally, all the hidden characters unlocked on one version can be used on the other without restriction, and in-game rankings show which device players are using.

Cross-Platform functionality allows DLC will be shared across both platforms, including the 100+ costumes already released that can be ported over using cross-platform transfer to allow players to use them with additional functionality on the PlayStation Vita version. Saves can be exchanged between systems, updating with the most recent data so progress is not lost, including unlockable content such as secret attire or new stages.

The features are certainly convenient for fans of the series who just want to play on the go, but one has to wonder if this is a sign that Dead or Alive 5 Plus is anything more than a portable port of last year’s console fighter? The claim that the game will run online at 60fps on both devices while playing online is quite a bold one as well and it will be interesting to see if it truly is a lag-free experience. Dead or Alive 5 Plus will be available for PlayStation Vita on March 22.
