Netflix has become a standard for many in the UK following its launch at the start of the year and whilst it is yet to really compete with its American counterpart, it’s certainly improving as time goes on. The service is immensely popular in the States with 23.6 million of the 26 million subscribers and in a country where the Xbox 360 outperforms the PlayStation 3 most months it’s surprising to hear that Sony’s console is the most popular platform for Netflix users.
“PS3 is our largest TV-connected platform in terms of Netflix viewing, and this year, at times, even surpassed the PC in hours of Netflix enjoyment to become our number one platform overall,” Netflix CEO Reed Hastings stated.
“PS3 is a natural fit for Netflix in terms of developing and first deploying our most advanced features. We can transparently update our application with new features on a daily basis, and through the free PlayStation Network, people around the world can sign up for Netflix directly from their PS3.”
Obviously Sony were extremely happy to hear this, with SCEA’s senior VP of business development Phil Rosenberg adding: “This is a major milestone, and one we’re particularly proud of considering the myriad Netflix-compatible streaming devices on the market, from other gaming consoles to smart TVs and internet-connected set-top boxes.”
With both consoles becoming more and more entertainment focused we’re likely to see viewing figures on them rise and rise, and with the big two (and now Nintendo) chasing after more and more of that market we’ll likely see more aggressive action to capture it.
