Portal 2 Perpetual Testing Initiative Puts Test Designers To The Test

By Dave Irwin, Sub-Editor

Yesterday we brought you news that PC and Mac owners of Portal 2 would be able to create their own tests in May. Obviously this is fantastic news as user generated content can potentially conjure up some of the greatest challenges of all time. Having seen this work wonderfully in Halo’s Forge mode and Trials Evolution’s custom tracks, there is no doubt in my mind that someone will think of some wonderful things for Portal 2.

Since then, a video has been released by Valve that eerily resembles the promotional material for Portal 2 prior to release. We even have JK “Cave Johnson Simmons reprising his role with much hilarity. No lemons here though, but a gullible octopus is an amusing replacement.

The downside is that console players don’t know if they will get a version of their own at a later date. Since Valve don’t have a tradition for releasing the development kits on consoles, I’d assume this would follow the same path. PlayStation 3 owners take heart though, at least you got a PC version bundled with your copy – if you redeemed it brand new that is. Xbox 360 owners? Well, you may have got shunted out of the equation. PC and Mac owners should be creating their own levels May 8, 2012.
