Earlier this year rumours began circulating that development of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 had been cancelled, and, unfortunately, GSC Game World has confirmed that development of the game has been put on ice.

On the team’s official website it stated that “We did not reach agreement with the rights owner regarding the use of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. brand, that’s why we made the decision to move forward as an independent studio with a new project”.

The newly formed studio, named Vostok Games, may be seen as a silver-lining for fans with the news that the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise will not be getting a sequel. The team even revealed what they’re working on next, a free-to-play MMO first-person shooter, entitled Survarium.

Project leader Ruslan Didenko said that “The concept of Survarium is a next evolution step for the idea of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. we’ve been working on for the last ten years”.

Whilst this new project may not appease fans that wanted a continuation of the original beloved franchise, the fact that the studio’s new project is based on the work they’ve already been doing on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 may offer an interesting alternative.
