We don’t cover all of the rumours surrounding the next generation of consoles as, well, we’d have no time for anything else. That said, no and again certain more reputable sites will post some information that, at the very least, is worth taking note of.
Today is the turn of EDGE, who claim, via an anonymous source of course, that Ubisoft Montreal currently has ‘target boxes’ for the next Xbox and are “hard at work” on them. “Delivery of the first iteration of genuine devkits, running custom hardware, is expected to reach studios before Christmas,” read the post before giving a possible release window of “late 2012″.
EA studios and other major developers are also understood to be in possession of the target boxes, which are essentially PCs containing off-the-shelf components provided by Microsoft, and it’s our understanding that several other major developers, including certain EA studios, are also in possession of these target boxes.
It’s not just the Xbox 360 successor that’s getting around though, as apparently one major Sony-owned studio has now ceased PlayStation 3 development, shifting its entire focus to the console’s successor, of which they have been involved in the development process of the graphics technology for it.
Obviously, take all of this with a big pinch of salt for now, but there is increased speculation of some sort of E3 2012 reveal.
What are your thoughts? Are you ready for some new hardware? And how important do you think getting to the market early is?
