Sony has confirmed that work is “already under way” on a platform to follow the PlayStation 3. Sony’s Masaru Kato revealed the news in a conference call today when asked to explain an increase in R&D costs. He said:
“For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life but this is a platform business, so for the future platform – when we’ll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that – but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there.”
It was only three months ago that SCE boss Kaz Hirai said “a near-future PS4 or next-generation home console is not something that we are even debating now”. With Project Café being unveiled in two week and rumours of a working Xbox 360 successor, it wouldn’t be too crazy to suggest Sony are already working on the PlayStation 4.
