US Market Gets Massive Boost

By Ryan Martin, Writer

NPD has revealed that the US market had a massive boost in the games industry. The latest NPD numbers have shown that sales are up 20 per cent compared to the same period last year totalling in value of $961.2 million.

Hardware sales are up 12per cent reaching $279.9 million with Microsoft winning the month selling 297,000 consoles, a huge 60 per cent year on year increase. The popularity of the console has caused it to become the best selling console for ten of the last eleven months and the best seller of 2011 so far.

Sony has also posted year on year sales increases with hardware and software up 13 per cent. PlayStation 3 games were up 40 per cent. The bad news came from Nintendo with the DS outselling the recently launched 3DS but no solid numbers were released.

Software sales increased by 24 per cent to $533.6 million although PSP game sales were in decline. The big performers were Portal 2 and Mortal Kombat with the fighter selling over 900,000 units.

In other April news, the UK got some lovely sunshine.
