The announcement of Resident Evil: Raccoon City didn’t fill a lot of fans with hope about the series returning to its roots and a trailer released Capcom won’t do much either. The new trailer is the first gameplay trailer released by the publisher and it doesn’t look scary, at all.
In case you have forgotten, the title is in development at Slant Six Games and is ‘a true third person team based shooter experience’ set in the during the original outbreak of the virus in Resident Evil 2. It is due out later this year for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Looks a lot of fun as a departure and I’m pleased to see such a classic setting return but I wouldn’t like to think of this as the future of the series, I’m already a little bit at odds with the way it has gone.
I want RE6 to be a return to true survival horror, not dashing about in blazing sunshine with a small army’s worth of weapons and fighting non-scary monsters.
Got into a mini rant there, apologies.
Not sure about outsourcing to Slant Six either, we’ve seen what can happen when Japanese developers do that …
Nevertheless, my hopes remain high for a new game in one of my favourite game franchises ever.
I’m not sure I agree with the ‘traditional’ survival horror. I think the mixup has been good for the genre and in my opinion can be scarier. It doesn’t rely on the darkness to fright you so has to come up with new ways of doing it.
I wonder if a middle ground would be best, perhaps at dawn or dusk?
That’s a great idea! A 24 or 48hr cycle with contrasting lighting and weather would add a hell of a lot before they even conceived the story, setting or characters. I almost feel excited now.
I’m not a huge fan on Resi games (or horrors for that matter) but I have foun the earlier Resi games to be a much scarrier affair than current games. Far too action orientated to be considered a Resi game IMO.
Ooo I hadn’t even thought of a cycle of lighting. Would be amazing! Allow exploration and freedom in day, and so scary at night; a bit like I Am Legend.

Never been a ‘huge’ Resi fan but looks good nonetheless.
