Square Enix has announced its highly-anticipated reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise.
Set to be known as just, Tomb Raider, the reboot will make us “forget everything” we know about Lara Croft as we see her “young and inexperienced” in a “journey of an ordinary woman who finds out just how far she must go in order to stay alive.” To be developed by Crystal Dynamics, the first full reveal is in the next issue of Game Informer, which they have this to say about it:
“In our world-exclusive cover story, we uncover a brand-new Lara Croft. Rebooting the Tomb Raider franchise through an origin story wasn’t so much a choice as an act of necessity, according to Crystal Dynamics. Drastic measures were needed. To build an entirely fresh Lara – a culturally relevant hero worth of the attention that once came so effortlessly – they must break her first. In this new adventure – simply titled Tomb Raider – a younger and inexperienced Lara Croft must endure both physical and emotional trauma to survive.”
Crystal Dynamics Head of Studio, Darrell Gallagher said, “Forget everything you knew about Tomb Raider, we are exploring things that have never been done before in this game. This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other.”
No platforms or release date were announced.

I’m never sure whether rebooting old ideas is the best thing to do. Still, the fact that Square are involved gives me hope that it might work. If the gameplay is going to be the same style, though, it has its work cut out to compete with uncharted.
Tomb Raider was in need of one really. Liking the new contemporary Lara though, even if it does have a hint of Lost to it.

I think the sales of Guardian of Light had a pretty big say in whether they were going to reboot Lara or not. Glad they chose to go for it though.
